The fair tax would be a huge overhaul of our entire tax system, so it's best to look into every aspect of it and consider all problems beforehand. I ask Huckabee 2 main questions about the Fair Tax:
1) Could a 23% federal sales tax cause inflation?
2) How would the tax deal with online sales?

Please go to www.communitycounts.us and vote for the questions you most want Huckabee to answer. This is a great opportunity for Community Counts to work, but only if everyone participates.

  • Read the book. It's 100 pages. Make it your bathroom reader for a week and all of your questions will be answered.

Also, arguing that states still have taxes is pointless. States will always have their own tax systems. If you don't like them, move to another state. That's not what the discussion is about. Do yourself a favor and stay on topic.

  • The "Fair" Tax is basically class warfare, the wealthy declaring war on the middleclasses by raising their effective tax rates. It would, by Americans for Fair Taxation's own admission, raise the effective tax rate of those making from $15,000 to $150,000 a year while lowering the effective rate of those making $150,000 and up a year. Source:tinyurl 593htl, page 30 on -pay particular attention to table 13, years 7-8 -- would you be "better off" if your income dropped from $25k to less than $10k?

  • Most of Fairtax isn't even retail -- it's on government wages, benefits, and pensions. Yes,every city, county, and state would have to pay taxes to the federal government on WAGES --- see HR 25, section 2a, subsections 7, 12, and 17.

Furthermore, this tax on wages would have to be paid IN ADVANCE in a lump sum. See Footnote 19, Fairtax document "Comparison of Fairtax Base" page 10.

Fairtax sounds great but it's goofy and deceptiove.

  • You comment on internet sales is a good question, but it is really such a small logistical question that it has little bearing on merit of the fair tax.

As to your comment on sales taxes added by states, well you already pay that now on top of your income tax. So it is really the same under any federal tax system.

Finally, even if prices go up some, it would be more than off set by incomes being much larger because they are untaxed.

  • Nine states have no state income tax. Seven states have a flat rate income tax.

  • There's nothing fair about tax !
