However, his theory of it being people immediately contradicts everything else he said throughout the season and we're never given any reason as to what changed his mind on the rules.
i disagree. this scene is brilliant. there's two ways to look at it: 1) Daniel's the most logical and arguably the smartest person on the show and yet he's so haunted by what happened in regards to his role in Charlotte's death that he convinces himself that this completely illogical thing will work (and Jack by proxy believes it because he's so broken inside) OR 2) Daniel knows he's going to be killed by his mother the whole time and is just making sure all this happens because it's suppose to.
This scene, to me, is when the show truly went full retard. To first develop one of the most logical frameworks for time travel within fiction ever and then just throw it all away by explaining that apparently Faraday forgot how humans work or some shit is astoundingly stupid.
