The Union Forever

The Union Forever is a found footage piece I edited in 2004. The song, with the same title, is performed by the White Stripes. All of the lyrics and one of the melodies come from Citizen Kane, which makes it a reimaginging of the film as a song. I thought it would be interesting to use this technique of reappropriation to translate the song back into images. All of the footage comes from the original film, but my editing stays away from the long take. I tried to see if the shots with deep focus could still be effective without seeing them for an extended period of time.

Also, the movie is greatly about how Kane wanted to be loved all his life but was never able to. This an be attributed to the loss of his mother. "Union Forever" was the song he was singing right before he left his family forever. It seems very painfully ironic for Kane to have sung about the union forever when in reality he ended up alone, being united to nothing.

This was so well put together! Amazing! Thank you for sharing. I love the song and have love "CFK" for so very long. I heard there was a "mash-up" for lack of a better term of the Stripes doing "The Union Forever" with parts of females singing the "enjoys a smoke, to tell a joke and wouldn't get a bit upset if he were really broke" part. Anyone know where I can find that? If so, I would appreciate it SO much! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
