They were separated for an astounding 64 years, but not even that massive amount of time could keep them separated for good.
Brian Perks and Beryl Burroughs are brother and sister, but were taken way from each other at the start of World War II when children were being evacuated to the English countryside.
Perks was only five and went with his father, while Burroughs remained in the care of her mother. And yet somehow Saturday, more than half a century later and far away from their homeland, the two were reunited in Whitby, On.
"It's such a long time, and knowing I had a brother out there somewhere I often thought about him," admits Burroughs.
"But there was no way I could do it, my mom would never talk about him at all."
Still, they remained aware of each other, their desire to reunite strong enough to cause a friend of Perks' to begin the process of tracking down his long lost sister. And it's a good thing they did.
"Taking away my sister was like taking away a part of me," said Perks.
"I couldn't understand why my sister couldn't be with me."
Not surprisingly, Burroughs felt the same way, and you might say it was that bond that made their eventual reunion possible.
"I always felt there was a bit of me missing, a bit of my history," she said.
Burroughs still lives in England, but made the trip to visit her brother, only to return a short time later. Still, the bond is officially reformed
