This is the first major composition by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, composed in 1957 as he was completing his studies in Italy with Goffredo Petrassi. It represents all of the most extreme and radical composition techniques of that period, and is still fairly intense even over 50 years later. Performed by the St. Stephens Chamber Ensemble of Phoenix, AZ, conducted by William A. Smith in concert at First Baptist Scottsdale, April 18, 2010.
