In this video I'm explaining a tantric technique called alternate nostril breathing or nadi shodhana. Nadi means channel and there are 3 main channels in the body. Sushumna Nadi, the primary nadi, runs down the center of the spine, Ida and Pingala Nadi, are the secondary nadis. Ida and Pingala meet at the third eye point and criss cross on the spine between the third eye point to the first chakra at the base of the spine. Ida and Pingala have a strong presence in the nose, where the bone and cartilage meet , Ida on the left and Pingala on the right. One of the reasons we try to keep all breathing in and out of the nose in yoga, is because we want to stimulate the nadis to be open and free of blocks .We want our energy to flow more freely through them.

In addition to helping with that, this technique balances the right and left lobe of the brain, balancing out dualities that exist in the mind so that we can get out of our own way. It allows the alpha waves to flow more freely though the brain.

As luck would have it, this is the safest technique and the technique that has the most profound effect on us. It relaxes the central nervous system.

Namaste,
Mary
