Dennis Leeflang - Time & Independence - Lesson 6 - Playing eighth notes and triplets at the same time
Ultimately, we can extend these exercises until they become impossible to play. The logical next step would be to play eighth notes and triplets at the same time.
In this one, we will be letting one limb play eighths and let one play triplets... at the same time. Back to a 4/4 beat at first.
Always two limbs at a time doing something more than playing quarters. The first limb from your starting point playing eigthts and the next one playing triplets. When moving on, the next limb plays triplets and the second one from before now plays eighths. We will still be moving from left to right, back to left etc.
So this would be the sequence:
1. left foot (hi-hat) plays eighth notes / left hand (snare) plays triplets
2. left hand (snare) plays eighth notes / bass drums plays triplets
3. right foot (bass drum) plays eighth notes / right hand (ride cymbal) plays triplets
4. right hand (ride) plays eighth notes / right foot (bass drum) plays triplets
5. right foot (bass drum) plays eighth notes / left hand (snare) plays triplets
6. left hand (snare) plays eighth notes / left foot (hi-hat) plays triplets
... and so forth!
After this you may wanna cut it down to a 2/4 beat.

  • ha ha yeah i get pissed off and crazy sometimes... but its coming. i think these days the most important thing is just knowing the damn songs

  • its ur brain, it needs neuropathways to be able to have limbs work independently, how do u build those pathways? by practising :) take an easy rhythm to play with 3 limbs and play a seperate rhythm (u may wanna do sumthing out of "syncopation" by ted reed) with your other limb. it takes a while and will probly make u really angry but u WILL get it

  • it's your left side of your brain conflicting with your right side. that's what this is all about is training your brain

  • Briljant dennis.

dit zijn ongeveer dezelfde oefeningen die je in het linde college hebt laten zien, maar toen klonk het natuurlijk veel mooier :)

  • Thanks for putting up these exercises!!

    cheers

    p,

  • It's good independence, but this is tooo simple.

  • I don't understand any thing he's doing... Sorry.

  • i searched you out because my left foot sucks... or at least i think it does, but maybe its fine, and its the other limbs that confuse me when i use my hi hat (with my foot). what is it about independence? is it the foot that has the weakness, or the relationship between the limbs? anyway, thanks for this exercise.

  • You are absolutely right. Problem is that I speak and write 3 languages and from time to time I have little farts like "you" instead of "your".

But as I said, you are right.

  • If you are going to type you should learn how to spell. Just a suggestion.
