You know this film is based on the director's life, right? Dito Montiel or w/e his name was, the movie is based on the book, whom the director wrote on his experience growing up in NY.

He simply didn't just 'die' so Dito could move on, he actually was shot and killed in real life, his real friend.

@sandbag959 he had to die so that labeouf's character, Dito, could fulfill his journey to become a writer. You could look at it as a kind of honouring of his friends life. All Dito knows is that he wants to get out of where he is, the death gives him a direction and a way of exorcising his demons.
