I was the quarterback of the Hayman County High School football team.

It was amazing just to think, and to say. My number was 15, which was my basketball and softball numbers as well. I kind of had a draw towards it. And I'm fifteen years old right now, so there it is again.

Coach Pounce asked Mr. Nelson if I could spend the latter half of band camp working with the team, since I was behind. We had only three weeks till the first game, and I'd have to put in extra work to catch up with the rest of the team and keep up with the band. But it kept me busy, and focused, so I was ready for this challenge.

When practice was wrapping up, my dad's monster F350 pulled up next to Gage's slightly smaller F250. When Dad got out with both of my brothers, I knew someone had told them I'd made it. Joe ran over and picked me up in a tight hug. Jack stalked over to the coach group with my father, and I could only imagine how pissed off he was. I tried not to let their attitude towards the turn of events effect me, but I couldn't help it. I wanted them to support me.

"Sam, Gage, Joe, get in the field house," my dad yelled across to us.

"Offense follow 'em in," the younger Pounce yelled.

I looked up at Joe in confusion, but he just shrugged his shoulders and walked beside me through the side doors into the familiar meeting room for the coaches. My dad sat down at one of the many chairs, and Jack sat next to him as the offense filed in followed by the teachers. A blush covered my face when Jack pulled me down onto his lap and wrapped his big, chiseled arms around me.

"Linemen," Jack said, his deep baritone voice right in my ear. "If you expect me to allow my baby sister to play on this team, I want you all to promise me right here and now that you will protect her no matter what."

"I'm not a baby," I chimed in, but my dad shook his head.

"Boys, you all must realize where we're coming from. Samantha is my only daughter," he said. "I know most of you have sisters, whether younger or older it doesn't matter. I'm positive none of you all would want your sisters playing football."

"I can't say that I would, when she gets old enough," Caleb said. A few around him nodded.

"So you can see why we're worried and want her protected." Joe spoke this time. Most of the boys in this room knew Joe well, were close to him, and had played with him three years ago. "I know you all will protect if, not only because she's a quarterback but because she's a girl too. Coach Pounce said they're going to keep her under the radar until the first game. But the other team will find out, and raise hell. Sam can take a hit, but no one wants to see that happen."

"Just promise me you'll protect her," my dad said.

"We will sir," Andrew spoke up. "Or at least I will."

"You can count me in too," another boy from my grade, James, said. "And you can bet that if anyone does get to her we'll all take the consequences that come with it."

"Your daughter's a very good QB," Coach Pounce said to my dad. "I can't remember the last time I saw one her age, of any gender, throw the ball the way she does. She's amazing."

"She's really that good?" Jack asked.

"She hit a Hail Mary from seventy yards out," Caleb piped in. "She didn't just lob it up like you'd expect. She actually placed the ball."

I looked up at Jack, who was staring down at me. I smiled at him. He had to know that I actually had talent; that I was on the team for a reason. This was something I really, really wanted to do. It wasn't just to prove people wrong and show them a girl could play football. I wanted to do this because I loved football. It was a passion of mine. And even though I always thought I'd never get the chance to play, growing up I'd force my brothers to let me play with them in the backyard. Of course, at first, they wouldn't play tackle. They'd let me hit them, but they'd only tap me. They got a little tougher on me the more and more I laid into them.

"Okay," Jack conceded. "I guess I'll go along with this. But one sack, and I'll personally level all of you in one on one drills."

The serious tone he used cause the entire offense to exchange worried glances. My brother was as big as my dad, if not taller. And he was an offensive lineman with the Titans. He knew how to protect the quarterback. His quarterback never, ever touched the ground when he was in the game.

"We got you," Andrew assured him.

I looked over at him, and he caught my eye. I felt my heartbeat speed up just a little in my chest, but the next second Andrew had looked away to talk to Caleb.

  • As I said to probably all your stories they are all amazing but I think her brothers should lay off a bit it's cute and all but they need to realize that she's growing up and that is something she likes to do. But I'm glad their willing to give her chance. When will you tell who the characters look like I'm concerned to know.

  • I love this book and I love that u put yourself in so much just to push yourself. I think that's super cool. Hope you have fun in high school, i personally love being in high school as a freshman. I hope you don't get over your head as some writers do, but I don't think you're one to do that.

    Have a good year!
