  • is my friend cheis washko on this

  • no sorry, i've never heard of him. then again i was on that ship over 3 years ago so the crew has changed a lot since then.

  • I precommed the Alex Haley out of Baltimore in 1999. Great time and trip bringing her up. I worked in the DC Shop as a DC3. I took a job at the FD on base afterward as a civilian.

  • Wow! That's awesome! I'm really glad you took the time to see this and especially comment.

  • this is not rough water not even close i know i was there from 74 to 76 on cutter confidence a 210 out of kodiak rough is when they cant cook for the crew you tie yourself into your rack to sleep and you dont go on deck to take videos

  • @JazzFiveO yeah, I got lucky (lots of hard work and sacrifice) and got in the best unions in the world. I would take 6 months vacation per year and still make $100,000. U.S. dollars per year. The food was excellent on the M.F.O.W. ships (Marine Firemen, Oilers, Watertenders and Wipers Association) because the MFOW has an excellent collective bargaining agreement. The Chief Engineer was forbidden to touch any of my refrigeration equipment because of jurisdiction. I walked tall in those positions!

  • @3Mudbone1 fascinating stuff, very different form my work, sounds great. It took 3 years to get that response from someone, thanks mate

  • @JazzFiveO The Aleutians, Kodiak, Bering Sea, St. Paul Island, etc are excellent in the wintertime. I preferrred seeing them from a 3 football field long containership than from a 230 Ft. icebreaker though. I had my own room and amazing autonomy as the Chief Refrigeration Engineer. We would go to Japan, Hong Kong and many other places as well. I have been to Japan about 100 times, Hong Kong about 65 times, Singaporea bout 47 times, etc. etc. Then I became a refrigeration mechanic longshoreman

  • I have sailed in the C.G. AND U.S. merchant marines in the engine department in the Bering Sea about 50 times. I enjoyed the merchant marines MUCH more! I was in the best union in the world for Chief Refrigeration Engineers on huge containerships making HUGE paychecks.

  • @gigapus35 washko was there before me

  • great video!

  • Nice video! I love Alaska.
