Enschede Fireworks Disaster Tribute

On May 13th,2000 at Enschede,The Netherlands a fire led to two massive explosions at the SE Fireworks Depot.

The explosion left 23 people dead including four firemen and 947 people injured.

estimated 2.000 homes were damaged or destroyed,leaving 1250 people homeless.

After the smoke from the fires cleared it looked like a warzone...

The residents did not even know there was a fireworks factory located next to their homes. (they thought it was a depot from the beer factory)

At the time of this disaster, i was 17 years old at the time and i just had done a long bicycle tournament through the Dutch polders in the area, when i came home, i took a break by sunbathing outside because it was a perfect weather day. A hour later at 17.00 i went to take a shower and my mother turned on the TV to see all the TV channels sending out the disaster outcome on the TV.

I remember swimming in the near town Hengelo, at the first blast i thought it was thunder, after the second blast ash started to fall from the sky, and a huge smoke cloud was visible. and that was at a distance of at least 10km. my parents were so freaked out, the came pick me up right away. was able to collect 100 bottles for some money for the people that lost their homes.

ik woon op wesselerbrink ik wss nog jong ben nu 17 maar lekker weer veel zon lig achter thuis in zwembad en in 1 keer boem en geloof me de grond shake em nog op wesselerbrink en je ziet tog in 1 keer een wolk kijk je uit het raam je ziet alleen maar rook en dan gaat de telefoon me opa in paniek dat zijn dak eraf was gevlogen kut dag dit echt bah door dit vind ik vuurwerk echt niks meer aan ben ook ieder jaar bij me opa omdat die dood bang is voor het

Ik zat toen zelf onschuldig in de bak in Engeland. Ik zag het op de BBC. Afschuwelijk. Het leek wel oorlog in Enschede.
