Oleander entered the military because his father was Uncle Sam, a character originally created by a sausage company, later used by the US government. He lost all of his innocence when he saw his father grind up the rabit into pate. The reason he imagines himself as a little child in his subconscious is because he wants to save his innocence represented by the Bunnie. Without innocence all he has left is guilt, violence, ambition and other such things. This is why he became a warmonger.
In the ending credits he is hugging bunnies, is he? :3
