http://www.ted.com The news that Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been detained by authorities has prompted significant concern here at TED-HQ. We had shown a film of him at last month's conference, an unexpected and courageous statement about his treatment by the government, social change, the power of the web, and his hope for the future of China. The film, which was shown as Ai Weiwei himself watched live over the web in the middle of the night, prompted a huge standing ovation from the TED audience.

TED is a non-partisan, nonpolitical organization and we understand the Chinese authorities concern at anything which might provoke social unrest. But for anyone who believes in the power of ideas, of human imagination, it is heartbreaking to see one of the world's great artists shackled in this way. We will be tracking developments carefully. Here is the film.

Actually, the rest of us see that Ai Weiwei truly loves China far more than your party members.

I suspect that you may not love china but rather you crave money, wealth, and power. This will make many problems for you in the near future.

i am so glad to see that many people who commented here are rational. Before the chinese find a more suitable political system, the stabity of society should be the most concerned. The political reform is underway all the time in China but the western medias never want to talk about the efforts that the chinese goverment did, Anyway, something like culture revolution or what happend in Square Tiananmen 89 are not possible happen again.

The PRC shot a block of ice into the mind of every creative Chinese person when they abducted Ai Weiwei. The legacy of this injustice will live on in History and with every further action they carry out the problem will become EXPONENTIALLY worse. The sort of free inovation of thought that blossoms in the minds of people like Ai Weiwei carries up to your scientists, engineers and inventors. Don't be afraid of Change. It works.

and you have a dwarf beard...so what? ;P

china's gov. is a cunt--true communism doesn't exist, it never will, and the dictatorship-esque slant they take is disgusting and completely and utterly immoral: they just outlawed slave labor camps...bloody hell, man!

Can you say that I'm denying the obvious when I just posted numbers? Are you letting your perceptions get away with you and refusing to look at facts? Driving is dangerous everywhere, not just China. I'm not denying the obvious, that when you stick your head out of a window from the city in China, there's pandemonium. I think the entire system there should improve but that the USA need to follow drunk driving rules and mph. Also, please stop attacking me. not in past comment, but in the future.
