For me this video is reminiscent of a 2000 french movie in which a man suddenly disappear on a beach without any reason, one day, and without leaving any trace nor being found at all: "Sous le sable" ("Under the sand"), by director François Ozon, with anglo-french actress Charlotte Rampling

What's nice about Noir Désir is that you may not understand the poetry of words, yet you may feel that something through the music. Their last album, Des Visages, des Figures, released a few days before 9/11... Listen to Le Grand Incendie... Best French album of the decade!

I agree with you, the melody is really closed to the poetry of the words. unbelievable . About 9/11, I really cannot say. In France, about this album, some do not think about 9/11, but just say "des visages" -"dévisage" (which sound same in French). A real great song anyway.

in the second verse, "Des méandres au creux des reins" better translates as "wandering at the small of the back" rather than the "hollows of thighs."

thanks for posting this video.

Maybe not exactly it's about death rather about that everything passes away but motive with changeing everything into dust (or gray sand - like on vid) is in christian religion comparable with death.
I'm basing my opinion on english translation. Probably someone French-speaking or fan of this performer could explain more.

ho yes, dust (in the lyrics) or sand (in the vid), are obviously, at "minimum", christian vocabulary. As a French listener, I must say that the words of the song are not "heavily" religious. It's just a normal (except talent) way of speaking. Anyway, the subject seems to be the deny of any hope, and of course it leads to religious questions for anyone that want too. But it's more in the subject than in the lyrics. Let's wait for a specialist of Noir Désir philosophy to comment it :).
