I remember my Dad, home on leave from the Navy, putting this on the record player, sitting me on his knee, and telling me a story about drowned sailors walking out of the sea to look for their lost children. I was FOUR YEARS OLD, for fuck's sake! Is it any wonder I have emotional problems?

As I recall, this tone poem was inspired by Arnold Boecklin's painting entitled Island of the Dead. It's worth a look on Google Images, because it complements the music perfectly.

Considering that Rachmaninov was a refugee from the horrors of the Soviet revolution, and that I think that "The Shadow over Innsmouth" had a lot to do with the terrors of contemporary totalitarian governments (yes, I know that Lovecraft was a Fascist sympathizer, but he was an artist first, and the artist knew better than the man), that makes sense. Think of the night-time disappearances, of the terrible purge - "maounds of the dead an' dyin;... never seed my Paw no more..." - obvious parallel.

The very fortunate people to be in attendance at a Svetlanov event in the theatre. This must have been impossible to forget.

Beautiful! I knew The Isle of the Dead thanks to Prévin, who is exceptional here too.

One of the best interpretation of "LÎle des Morts" I ever heard.

thank god i'm not alone in this planet :) the sea factor is very strong in both works and i also think that the ''colorlessness'' of the music and the book designs a great match. also, rachmaninoff once said about this masterpiece as ''if i would see the colored version of the painting, i wouldn't have composed such music''. considering the fact that innsmouth is (or should be in my opinion) a place with dust, industrial ashes and grey and merciless seaside, both works are parallelly inspired :)

Uncanny! Two years ago, when I first heard this music I immediately thought about the shadow over innsmouth. Never a sentence caught by chance on internet came so close to something I'd thought. Is it the sea factor present in both works?
