As we gather this week in the USA to celebrate the Birthday of our independence, we also partake what has become a mighty folk tradition; namely, the eating of hot dogs.

The USA has long been called "the melting pot." The name reflects the amazing diversity of her citizenry and generally eclectic nature of her broader culture. This term is also correct to imply that these are things which, once mixed, are not easily seperated. To a food lover (such as myself) this sounds alot like making sausage which offers an interesting link indeed between the unique cultural landscape of this nation and the favored fare of friends and family frequenting our federal freedom festivities each fourth of July.

Here are a few more fitting frankfurter facts to chew on:

the American people will consume 150 million hot dogs over the 4th of July weekend and 2.3 billion hot dogs in the month of July
In 2006 the top 5 hot dog eating areas of the USA were.
1. New York - $101,356,800
2. Los Angeles - $78,290,600
3. Baltimore/Washington - $46,025,980
4. Philadelphia - $43,655,900
5. Chicago - $41,115,440
There is a new hot dog eating champion.
Americans will eat enough hot dogs at major league ballparks this year to stretch from RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. to AT&T Park in San Francisco.
New Yorkers consume more hot dogs than any other city -- beating out Chicago and Los Angeles.
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport consumes SIX times more hot dogs -- 725,000 -- than Los Angeles International Airport and LaGuardia Airport combined.
On Independence Day, Americans will enjoy 150 million hot dogs -- enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. over five times.
During Hot Dog Season -- Memorial Day to Labor Day -- Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs -- or 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.
U.S. soldiers in military posts around the world -- from Fort Meyers in Arlington, Va. to Okinawa, Japan to Aqaba, Jordon -- consumed 2.4 million hot dogs last year.
Hot dogs also make great stunt doubles for fingers....the following video is a great CompactRIO keynote demo from NI Week 2005....don't try this with your hot dog at home.
