I am trying to save up to build the kestrel design that you can get at vortech. I am wanting to use the gluhareff g-8-220i engines on the rotors. Does anybody know anything about these? I have read the company website and would love to see the helicopter he designed test flown.
Another point to make is these ram jet helicopters are misleadingly simple, and are very thirsty with the gas, and as somone else siad make hell of a racket.
My grandfather worked for Hiller in the 50's before they moved operations back east. He said they would use a lit kerosene soaked rag on a pole or throw matches up to get this thing going. My dad remembers seeing it flying around at dusk too, this big ring of fire flying across the sky.
There's a private-collection aviation museum on I-4 between Orlando and Tampa that has an operational Hiller Hornet. In fact, all aircraft in that collection are operational.
I was disappointed to learn on my visit to the Hiller Aviation Museum in the Bay Area that I'd missed seeing this by a week. I never would have imagined that one of these remained in flyable condition.
Fantasy of flight have one of these, I had a chat with the owner and he said
If it’ll burn, it’ll turn! Just about any fuel that burned could be used for fuel such as gas, kerosene or Jack Daniels!
Also he cannot run it as the thing could be hear in a 2 miles radius!
