No question about it! BULGARIA was VASTLY SUPERIOR to GDR and USA at these Olympics. There was a creativity to the performances of the Bulgarians that was beyond evident.
Gold: USSR
Silver: Romania
Bronze: Bulgaria
4th: GDR
The only reason USA had such a high score was because they had the benefit of competing in the last rounds of both compulsories and optionals. Scores escalate even if the routines are not better than those performed in previous rounds.
The US deserved the bronze, as we have said ad infinitum here. The US wasnt favored for bronze, but remember they were seeded 6th only because THEY had early draws at Rotterdam worlds the year before, and as a result they got screwed. So, I guess it was Bulgaria's turn in 1988 and China's turn in 1996.
Boriana Stoyanova was severely scrutinized with a 9.475. The routine had form breaks but amazing lines and the great serenity that characterized her gymnastics. At minimum, BUL lost 1.00 in compulsories because they had to deal with the first session of compulsories and were not able to compete in the final session of TO. By competing in the next to last session of TO, they lost at least another .50. They were the undisputable bronze medalists of the 1988 Olympics.
She straddled the glide before the jam - I don't know how much of a deduction that was - possibly 0.3?

you are correct, but a 9.6 would have been a fair score

i saw the severe knee bend on the jam through and a horrible handstand on low bar. I would have given this rouitne a 9.65
