English spelling is complex and illogical; if we simplified it, it would make life simpler for everyone.

But is it possible? Different accents and dialects make a truly phonetic system difficult, if not impossible, to implement.

In the middle part of the Nineteenth Century our city attempted to convert it's population to a phonetic alphabet. One newspaper even published portions of its 1859 editions in the distinctive system.
