Knockdown is done without gloves because gloves changes how you punch. But most important is that with face punches in a pure striking game you have to either use boxing gloves, restrict power or accept horrible injury rates. A tournament without gloves, with headpunches will get you injured

Also. The founder of kyokushin once killed a man with a single punch to the head

There was a law against bareknuckle brawling when the rules was created, and the "no head-punch" rule sidestepped it
