There is a splendor of a watchmaker's craftsmanship to the making of a Mercury space capsule. We seem to put a functional cockpit inside a large missile casing? But putting 250,000 pieces of independently functional components into a space smaller than a telephone booth is a hell of a feat! And to think some people were skeptical of spending tax dollars and human life, so Americans can ride an satellite ; this was a courageous gamble that change the way we saw our place in the Universe.
