This was more or less a basic test of how the camera performed recording with lots of wind. Yes, quite shaky video, it was handheld with one hand on a bicycle going 40. I plan on getting some sort of better mounting system in the near future. Never switched to 120% throttle, this was done at 99. GPS confirmed top speed at 99% is 40.5. Never actually had enough room to top out on GPS at 120% throttle, but it was in the 47MPH range before I ran out of road.

Lyen 12 Fet, Beefed up traces, 10 AWG phase and power wires.
65A Rated, 160A Phase current limits
8x 6S 5AH Turnigy Lipo @ 24S2P
Stock 48V 1000W Golden Motor Rear Hub Motor
No Chain Mod

Range varies WILDLY depending on how its used. I take it to work most days, in speed 1, 35% throttle, WOT. About 16 MPH. Something like 35-45 mile range like that. If you set the cruise control down to 6MPH, you can expect closer to 80 Mile range. WOT at 99% throttle is maybe only 5-10 miles. 120% throttle? Better be next to an outlet.

  • What esc are you using?

  • @my73737373 Lyen 12 FET Infenion IRFB4110PBF, slightly modified.

  • I ordered the batteries and a brushless hub motor. It should arrive in a week or so but the only problem I have now is how I am going to charge 10 6s lipo relatively fast and cheap. The only solution I am thinking right now is to buy 10 lipo charger and charge every battery individually. What are you using?

  • @Vaporcartel It's not a good idea to charge them individually. A better bet is to charge all 6S packs at the same time off a single big charger, with the balance taps in parallel to self-balance. You know all cells are essentially the same voltage and relative balance. I used to use dual Hobby King ECO 6-10 chargers, which are rated at 200W each. I now use a iCharger 106b every few cycles, and a custom 2KW MeanWell PSU setup that charges my bike in 10-20 minutes.

  • Do you have a better choice for the motor? It is brushless? Is that the biggest hub motor available?

  • @Vaporcartel This is the biggest 'cheap' hub motor available. Something like the Crystalyte 5404 or 5304 would be much better, as this motor is a bit beyond its limits at 6kW. Yes, 3 phase BLDC, as indicated by the BGY colored phase connector. The bike has changed quite a bit since this video. I have a 5404 on the way, which is one of the largest hub motors available, and it's awfully hard to get.

  • @Vaporcartel The batteries were purchased from Hobby King, theyre 6S 5000mAh Turnigy 20C LiPo, and I have 8 of them on the bike. The bike is programmed to 65A right now, and 24S hot off the charger is about 100V, making for just over 6KW. Its quite a bit of power for a hub motor, especially a cheap one. It destroys hills at nearly top speed. It can go up very steep inclines with ease. The motor is only designed for 1KW, so 6KW makes it get hot if you abuse it, so you cant go too crazy.

  • I like it! This is what I want to build myself. Please tell me from where you got the batteries with 50$ ea.? Can you go uphill with the bike?

  • @74orangebeetle Its very expensive compared to the standard 2 stroke chinese gas engine. Anything fairly powerful, and with decent range, is going to be at least $1K + bike. Theres a whole lot of ways to do it, but the way I did it is about as cost effective as you can. The motor is about $350 shipped, batteries are $50 ea. and depends on your desired range. I have 8 6S LiPo in 24S2P config, which gets me 10-100 miles depending on speed, about 40 miles at 20 MPH. This setup is about $1200.

  • This is amazing! How much did it cost? I currently have a gas powered bicycle but wish I had an electric one. The main thing that's been stopping me is the price of the batteries.
