Officials in one Indian state have come up with a unique way to generate electricity...through sewage gases. It has also generated profits for the region.
Municipal officials in India's Surat City have come out with a useful way of generating electricity... using sewage gases.
Officials say electricity generated by sewage gas-based power plants has benefited the region economically.
[S. Aparna, Commissioner, Surat Municipal Corporation]:
"Currently we are producing electricity power from sewage gas by sewage gas based power plants. We have a capacity of 3.5 megawatts. Up till date we have produced about 30 million units in the last four to five years which has a value of over rupees 13 crore."
The municipal corporation of Surat City was trying to move towards the production of renewable sources of energy to lower the pollution in the environment.
[S. Aparna, Commissioner, Surat Municipal Corporation]:
"We also produce reduce fuel palates which can be used as alternative fuels in boilers from about 400 tons of municipal solid waste or garbage everyday and recently we have commissioned our wind power which is having a capacity of 3 mega watts. So we are moving towards replacing conventional power through renewable sources of energy."
The municipal authorities also monitor the production of fertilizers through waste products.
@azado32 its not new but how many of us follow this and help for our nation and world.

...you could fulfill our current needs AND replace all petrol cars with electric ones AND remove all the nuclear power stations AND move towards zero landfill.

Shouldn't we all be doing that? Likewise put kinetic energy plates on the floor of every nightclub, busy pavement and speed hump and use crematoriums and incinerators to generate power too - anything which would have been built anyway but which could act as a mini power station should do so IMHO. That plus wind turbines (particularly really tall ones) plus solar panels on every roof plus a smart grid system to utilise the grid more effectively...
