In honor of an artist that I've just been blown away by over the past decade or so, I decided to upload this video. As of the date of this upload, Mr. Elling is scheduled to appear at the annual Chicago Jazz Festival held over the Labor Day Weekend which is just about 2 weeks from now. In anticipation of the show I've been playing all of my Elling albums even more than I normally do! Here is one of my favorites from Kurt. Here he does an extra-hip vocalese treatment of one of my favorite tenor sax player's legendary trip through the standard "Body And Soul". Of course, the sax man I'm referring to is Dexter Gordon and this is a vocalese of his exploration of the tune from his iconic "Homecoming: Live At The Village Vanguard" album from 1976.

Lineup:
Kurt Elling - vocals
Laurence Hobgood - piano
Christian McBride - bass
Willie Jones, III - drums

  • Yeah he is very smooth. Hey do you know what song he sings where the lyrics are something like : In the world/where can I find my true love?/a million miles away/if I could fly to her.....

  • @elguapotetigre Sorry, but I can't recall a song that he sings with those lyrics. I have every one of his albums but maybe it's a song that I haven't paid much attention to. I'll check through the songs to find which one, if any, possess the lyrics you mention. But thanks for commenting. I'll get back to you in either case.

  • @beeshor1 lol I had a hard time finding it as well. I first heard it from a car commercial from Japan in 1998. I know he's pretty famous in Asia.

  • @elguapotetigre I just double-checked all of my CDs and none of them have that song that's on that commercial. It's too bad because that song sounds really nice. I wonder if it's part of Elling's new album called "The Gate". That one I don't have yet.

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING!! I love this song- I find these lyrics so moving. Thank you for sharing :-)

  • @jazzsingerlady Thank you for your comment. I love this take on this song, too.

  • @elguapotetigre OK, the song is called A World Away and it took some finding - I had to post on the Kurt Elling facebook page to find out and someone tracked it down. Here is a youtube video with the song:

Apparently it's on the Album This Time It's Love - but it's a bonus track on the Japanese version!

    Phew!! lol
