I have been looking for this movie in DVD for many years with no luck. Very disappointing. It's such a powerful classic. I choke when she has to chose which child will die, just such a gut wrenching scene. Nothing else has ever touched me in a movie as this scene.

this movie has haunted me since i saw it in 1983. i would like to see it again now that i've got some years on me. disturbing is what i call it... Sophie's choice :(. so, so sad, and yet so telling of things that probably really happened. brilliant performance by Meryl Streep, et al.

Yes, I also think that's why she chose her boy. It's not explained in the book ( very frustrating). There is also the possibility that she didn't really make a choice but just said a name in her panic. With only a few seconds to make such a choice, you can't really think.

Still bothers me that she gave up the girl. It should have been the boy. I can't stop thinking about what happened to the girl even though it's just s movie.

Meryl Streep has said she could only play that scene where she hands off her daughter once...it was so emotional an experience to go thru. We are all indebted to the work of an artist for that scene and her performance are part of movie history.
