I meant to record this bird also. But I'm always hammered when I hear it!

I remember hearing this kind of bird chirping for a while out in Western Maryland in the middle of the night when I was camping and some teenage guy yelled at the bird to shut up

ok...so not what i expected. i thought it was a long haunting cry...due to songs by say alan jackson & a few others. but if that truly is a whippoorwill...id probably either shoot it or myself just to hear silence LOL sounds just like my neighbors doves really coo cooo COO coo coo COO!
anyway...at least i know what they sound like.

I remember earing them in western Kentucky. They say up in the NE USA the whipoorwhills have been in decline.

They were very common in western Mass. back in the 60's when I was a kid, now you never hear them anymore.

One of my fav backwoods sounds *wink*

Yea, that call is all elegant and shit when you are camping. When one lives in the woods around your house prattling all night, you dream of flamethrowers, that is if you can sleep at all.

I got one out in the back behind the shed. It's amazing just to sit and listen to it :) and I'm in Alabama! Ain't nothing better than the sound of a whippoorwill

Whippoorwills=Amazing
When we went camping up in Vilas County Wisconsin back in June we would hear these for a couple hours straight and then they would suddenly be quiet. Where in northern Wisconsin was this recorded by?

It was recorded just inside of eastern Forest County near Goodman Park.

Whipoorwill call-blasting:
I downloaded some Whippoorwill sounds to my mp3 player and plugged it into my car, cranked it up with all the doors open and I brought him right to the tree where I had my car parked from about a quarter mile away in less than a minute. Cool.
