Transferred from super 8 footage shot when I was a kid... Not sure of the exact date of this game but it was during the 72/73 season. Some great footage of the one and only Bobby Orr
This film is from december 29,1972 Bruins at North Stars. The Bruins won this game 2-0 with Orr scoring the first goal as you see here. This game was also the first game nationally televised by NBC TV on a friday night. THe first Bruin you see skating looks like Orr, but it is actually unknown (at the time) rookie Terry Oreilly #24. He only played 1 game in 71-72 the finale against Toronto scoring his first nhl goal. He was a teammate of Eddie Johnston until a late season trade sent EJ to tor.
I was at this game. I'm a die hard North Star fan but it was really hard not to like Bobby Orr and the Big Bad Bruins back then. I actually have photos from this game on Wed. March 8 of 1972 posted on mr FB photo album. Boston won this game 5-4. It was my first NHL game. My dad took me to the Met Center (Now sadly, Mall of America) when I was 11 years old. Great video! Thanks for the memories. I live in Chapel Hill, NC now and follow the Carolina Hurricanes. I will always be a North Star fan.
Any chance to see videotape of the great Bobby Orr or The Bruins of the seventies is a great pleasure to mostly all in the New England area. I spent many days and nights playing pond hockey freezing my ars off because of that #4- and I loved every minite of it! If I might mention 1 thing in the video; looks like Orr may have scored and he still keeps his stick and his head down. Class drips off him.
@rf396 I'm not even surprised about your picture: Mr Orr is such a gentleman! In the late 60s I was a kid and lived in Quebec City... So the natural team to support was obviously the Habs. But the first game I was allowed to watch on TV (only the first period!) was a Bruins-Rangers game and the first goal was scored by... Bobby Orr. That was it, I was a fan. So my team was the Boston Bruins, while my dad and two brothers were Habs fans. Nowadays I'm a Hab fan, but the B's are close second!
@Merti63 Trust me my friend I am VERY VERY aware of just how fortunate I am. i wrote Bobby a letter 7 years ago to tell him what it meant to all of us growing up at that time. I never expected an answer but with a WEEK I got an 11x17 of THE GOAL personally autographed to me with a personal message. I once gave Derek Sanderson a lift to Brendan Byrne area about 2 miles total when he did color for the B's in 80's-90's, Ive been up close to Gerry Cheevers, Espo, The Chief, and a couple of others.
@Merti63 are you kidding me? MY PLEASURE, this brings back so many great memories of going to the Garden and actually SEEING these guys. THAT was HOCKEY!!!!!!! and "I" was very very lucky to have grown up during that magical time

Looks like Cesare Maniago in goal for the North Stars and Ed Johnston for the Bruins.

@rf396 So if that game was played during the 71-72 season, it was either played on:
december 30th 1971 (final score: 2-2)
february 19th 1972 (6-4 win)
march 8th 1972 (5-4 win)

@Merti63 This game would have been IN Minn at the old MET CENTER, black was the away color for the B's in 72
