Scientists at the CERN research centre in Switzerland are expected to make a major announcement on Tuesday.

It is thought they have found evidence of a particle that underpins everything we know about how the universe works.

If confirmed - and it's a big "if" - it would be the most significant breakthrough since scientists discovered the structure of DNA almost 60 years ago.

Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba explains.

  • Are European scientists overtaking Americans? Europeans living in America have made many discoveries, so one might say Europeans have always been leading serious scientific research.

  • @bananaondrugs

Yes, about that you are right. It was a quick shot. But you also need to consider that this is a really big story. The definitive discovery of the higgs boson will be nearly as significant as the discovery of life elsewhere in the universe, or the development of the first artificial consciousness that is intelligent and self-aware. Its a story so big that no news outlet wants to risk of missing it. So, even if quick shots suck, expect more of them.

  • @kurtilein3 I never said discovering it's properties would be insignificant. I merely complained about the so called "news". If they had waited a little more and actually gave new facts instead of going on the rumor that they may announce a discovery I wouldn't have said a damn thing. It's them basicly saying "we heard that some smart guys will probably announce something so we should tell everyone before we know a damn thing" that annoys me.

  • @ImBackAJ20101 only because they call it "God Particle*

  • @humaner Well, you gotta have some idea what you're looking for. 'Unbiased' observations have been made throughout history and theoretical frameworks have developed to explain them. Now it's time to once again test these frameworks, always with the possibility that they break down at some point. They're certainly open to not finding the Higgs, which is just as worthwhile a money expenditure as finding it.

  • As long as scientist require tangible evidence in their research, they will never find the answers to anything and there will always be something new that trumps the old. They have a long way to go. What a waste of time, money and effort. This I know!!

  • The Higgs Boson is just another particle in an an infinite dimension of particles from micro to macro. When you get to the particle called consciousness...then you'll gain my attention!!

  • Energy and mass are NOT the same thing.

  • Yeah. Scientists are awaiting to announce the "god particle". LMAO

  • @gee08gee But, there is no god XD Not yours anyway, Allah is the one true GOD hehehe
