Why would I trade my water, food, gun or ammo for shiny little pieces of metal? I can't drink them, eat them, shoot them or use them to shoot cartridges.

Yes, they have value in the world market, and are the only way to truly preserve your savings, but I would never trade a chicken that lays eggs everyday for shiny metal in a SHTF situation.

LOL, you're not going to last very long on a bottle of water, some yucky Spam, and crappy low grade Remington Ammunition. Watch WW2 videos. Imagine yourself in the worst of warzones... Stalingrad, Warsaw, Guam, Vietnam even. You want good comfy boots. Warm clothes and heating supplies. Lots of food. Non-perishable food. Like bulk rice and noodles. Protein, lots of protein. A place to hide. Rare things that are the necessity of life to trade for what you need on the black market.

@kingmike40 Good call on a water filter. I saw a Sawyer for about $70 bucks on Amazon that claims it will filter up to 1 MILLION gallons down to .01 microns. And it can be "Gravity fed" or many other ways. They also claim the filter can be "Back-flushed" to clean, and never has to be replaced. Regardless, I would still treat and/or boil it. Respectfully, I think not having fire is easily avoided, and extremely irresponsible. $20 can buy you 10,000 "Chances" for 1 fire, very easily.

Kingmike40--There are several good water preservatives available on the market. I purchased a concentrate from the "Ready Store" that will treat and preserve a 55 gallon barrel of water for 5 years. For smaller amounts, I just purchased bottled drinking water--it is treated and it will keep for several years, the use by date is just legalize.
