Russia's Fyodor Dostoevsky, one of the greatest writers of all the times, claimed that there is no crime without punishment inflicted by the criminal's conscious. Woody Allen thought otherwise. Watch a slide/video narration of this exciting intellectual duel. Featuring scenes from "Crimes and Punishment," "Crimes and Misdemeanors," and "Matchpoint." A presentation on the issue was made by Leonard Storchevoy at the 2nd Fine Arts International Conference in Bangkok in 2010.
to clarify further -
to forward mass murderers like nazis(& churchill, obama etc.)as counter examples to dostoevsky's raskolnikov is faulty.these ppl think or seem to think they are not criminals(any more than judges passing death sentences or hangmen)but merely expressions of law & interests of their society.they are supported by many when committing crimes.
-
raskolnikov is alone & very conscious he is breaking law.
woody's heros's are too,
but while D digs deep, WA doesn't & is superficial.

this is silly.
woody allen is a superficial runt- entertaining & sometimes provoking but nothing more.
should not even be compared to dostoevsky.
-
whether horrible crimnals(including nazis, rulers of genocidal british empire like churchill,or present day western murderers like obama, bush etc,)suffer internally cannot ever be known to others.
they certainly try to claim(to themselves as well as others)that what they do/did are not a crimes.
is that strength or running away from consequences?

I see, as a lot of western people forget as he there was the Russian military engineer also as Tolstoy was an officer and artilleryman protecting Sevastopol against the Britannic interventionists. But They were able to explain philosophy of Russian soldier for western people!

This is quite interesting, thank you. Still, as a Jewish person, Woody Allen should also remember that although the wicked at times do not receive justice on earth, all will face judgement on That Day.

I know that there are evil men in the world who prosper because of their evil deeds.
But are evil people happy? Happiness is not equal to pleasure. Can they trust others? Can they love, be loved, and can they be psychologically consistent in doing so? I don't think Allen proved these things nor did he prove that Judah retained or ever had peace of mind. Perhaps Judah was just relieved that his soul (which had been drowning for so long a time) had finally quit struggling and was dead.

@ThaiRussiaHouse Did Woody Allen really prevail? I agree that he makes his point very forcefully - the scene where he says: "But that's fiction." is ingenious
I'm not so sure. According to Woody Allen and Nietzsche and others - the stronger man is able to overcome his conscience but I think we're comparing apples and oranges. I would say that the man in Crimes and Misdemeanors murders (as atrophied and retarded as it was) his own soul. Roskolnikov's soul survived or was reborn.

@Gesztike1 because intelligent people don't spend time on YouTube; they're too busy reading.
Of course, you are a rare exception ;-)
