A remarkable document. Not always a tenor that I care to listen to, but I have to admit that he is stunning here. Very little deterioration in the voice from singing for 40 years! He saves nothing, gives it all, and is thrilling. George Fortune is the Iago and Lopez-Cobos conducts.

McCracken died a year later.

  • IF I SOUND LIKE THIS AT THE AGE OF 60...ILL BE HAPPY AS HELL!!!!

  • McCracken sounds nearly the same as he did forty years prior.

  • Hard to tell whose voice is darker/heavier!

  • The greatest American Otello ever--right up there with Del Monaco, Vinay, Domingo and Vickers. There's no one today who can do the role justice (I saw Johann Botha a couple of years ago in San Francisco--nice voice but not like this--and not an actor.)

  • @angusmcrandy Did it ever seem to you that JM had lost too much weight? I mean, he was a big guy, and he seems almost skinny here. Although his voice sounds full and free --

  • @angusmcrandy McCracken was almost certainly the best purely dramatic tenor that America has developed. He was a superb Otello, Canio, Samson, etc. (I saw and heard his Samson live, and it was overwhelming.)

I sure wish he'd sung Tannhauser beyond that single Met season (1977-78). I heard him in the role on radio and thought he was excellent. He would also have made a terrific Tristan:) ---

  • Still virile and vibrant. Proof that it is possible to sing well into your 60s - and with the benefit of many years of experience, profer a truly superior performance. More mature singers should be singing today. We have far too many young singers taking on these roles before they should be singing them and ruining their instruments in the process. A great artist in his element. Stunning.

  • Riveting performance by JM and really interesting to see him in a signature role employing that very visceral breathing technique. Thanks for sharing this!

  • May this great artist rest in peace:) ---

  • I like it!
