Why does he look so disgusted all the time? Because he doesn't like the piece, or because he realizes that his considerable deviations from the score (for instance, added octaves in the bass at 3:36 and 4:19, or mezzoforte/forte at 5:11/6:45 instead of pianissimo/piano) suck?
Has anyone noticed that the visual is completely out of synch with the sound? Is this the actual recording of this performance?Or is it some sort of fake?Like, a better performance in the studio cobbled together with vision?Very strange.
@MrPluto1999 Confound it, you're right! Here I thought Berg was simply "defying gravity" and cleverly making an atonal thing sound tonal. Still sounds very harmonically ambiguous a lot of the time, but after having listened closely again, I see you're right. It's in an actual key. I had forgotten that NONE of the "Big Three" ever got around to composing completely atonally until much later on.
I don't know, for sure he has a lot to say but I find this really, really heavy, in fact this is the heaviest opening theme of the Berg Sonata I've ever heard. And he does take a lot of liberty with the score, which is not necessarily a bad thing but considering the considerable amount of details Berg put into it I must say it surprised me. There is no question about he feeling the piece but I must say, in my taste, that I find it a bit "crude", but some would say that it was the intention.
Man, I advice you to listen some music of Ahmet Adnan Saygun, Cemal Reşit Rey, Ulvi Cemal Erkin etc. Maybe you love their music, too. They are important composers. Please don't think with prejudgement.
I love this version!

"Great musician and intellectual. Turkey has a fine tradition of conservatories and musicianship. "
oh yeah ! is there juste one turkish componist ? Serious music is more difficult than cutting kebab.
Fazil is an exception from this philistan land.

@bsdml This work is not "twelve-tone" -- it is in the key of b minor. Have a listen.
