@IbanezArtist85 Actually that isn't true. The word in greek infact was "petros" you have it back to front. Peter being married had nothing to do with being Pope, unill the 4th century older men were generally allowed to be ordained - providing they remain chaste, ofcourse. It was untill the Council of Elvira in 305 AD that marriage was prohibited altogether for the ordained.

@DCDUO When Jesus said "...and upon this ROCK I will build my church." he used the Greek feminine form of the word rock; which is "petra." The name Peter in ancient Greek is "Petros" - the masculine form. It was a play on words that doesn't come across very well in English. The "petra" being referred to here is Peters statement in Matt 16:18 - "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Upon this, Christ would build His Church; not upon poor Peter. Besides, Peter was married. Matt 8:14

It's amazing how this interpretation of the patterns on the paving of St Peter's Piazza manages to completely ignore the horizontal line that runs through the middle.
