With praise, Victor Davis Hanson, said that the officer corps of the US military tend to have a "19 Century outlook." People in the US military, tend to have the tragic view of the world and that view is needed for an effective military. When a military adopts, in totality, the mindset of its civilian counterparts, it will be unable to ever win victory, no matter how well armed and trained and equiped. This man's matter a fact world view is as important as any weapons system.

we landed at SEATAC airport Sept 69 and were told bye the pilot "there is a disturbance outside the terminal; deplane and hurry inside"...I had just spent a year living like an animal; shot at eating "food" filled with bugs and drinking nasty water. The demonstrators had ice and were pelting us with us; HAD we had M-16's we would have killed every one of them and never blinked; I honestly WANTED to go back to Vietnam with my Brothers I left behind.
