"Tarzan's New York Adventure" was Johnny Weissmuller's sixth MGM film as Tarzan, the last for that studio. It was directed by Richard Thorpe in 1942 and also starred Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane; Johnny Sheffield as Boy; Virginia Grey as Connie Beach; Charles Bickford as Buck Rand; and Chill Wills as Manchester Montford.

  • Apparently Cheeta is alive and well.

  • You must have missed the whole controversy about the animal known as Cheeta, now owned by Tony Gentry, that received a lot of attention for it's 75th birthday a few years ago. Author Richard Rozen wrote an article pointing out:

    1. Gentry claims he brought Cheeta to the US on a Pan Am filght in 1932 but transatlantic flights didn't start until 1939;

    2. Gentry claims Cheeta appeared in Doctor Doolittle as Chee-Chee in 1967, but that animal was a juvenile chimp about 8.

    Other claims are similar.

  • There were rumors that he actually jumped off the Broklyn Bridge and that he broke three ribs and almost die. But was lucky to have survived.

  • I'm afraid this is other one of those urban myths. The only scenes filmed in New York were a few establishing shots of scenery and locales done by a film crew sent to New York for that purpose. The dive from the Brooklyn Bridge was filmed by cameraman Jack Smith from the top of the MGM scenic tower on lot 3, shooting straight down as a dummy plunged into a tank. A close examination of the scene indicates it is a dummy, but it is an extremely convincing scene and very well done.

  • I loved this movie when I was a kid. In a premise that goes back to Aesop, Tarzan, the original naturalist, takes on New York City and wins!
