The Freelon Group, a Durham architectural firm, and partner HOK of Atlanta have been named the architects of record for the $125 million Center for Civil & Human Rights in Atlanta.

The $125 million museum is expected to be about 100,000 square feet. Freelons design features a terracotta-clad building surrounding an exterior courtyard, which will serve as an amphitheater and exhibit space.

The winning design is inspired by the simple yet powerful image of interlocking arms that signifies the linkages that empower individuals and groups of seemingly divergent interests to find common ground, Philip Freelon, president of The Freelon Group, in a news release.

The Freelon Group and HOK will work with Center leadership, exhibit designer Gallagher & Associates and project manager Cousins Properties Inc./Gude Management Group to finalize the facilitys design prior to breaking ground this winter.
