YOu've gotten the stocks ,confused with a pillory
the alleged witch put her/his arms int the pillory.. the top was closed/slammed over the botomof the pillory... it was locked bu a metal rod which was slipped through the pillory..
The alleged witch's head& arms were clapped( 17th century term) in the stocks,thetop of the stocks were brought down on tot he stocks...the onlysilularity between the two was the metalrod which was used to lock both devices
