A collection of recent paintings, prints and prayer flags by Roger Goldenberg, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will be on view in AVA Gallery and Art Centers Clifford B. West Gallery from October 10 through November 15, 2008. A reception, free and open to the public, will take place Friday, October 17, from 5 to 7pm.
Goldenberg received his BFA from the University of New Hampshire and his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His work is inspired by his love for jazz music, and he cites, in particular, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie Byrd as influences. His paintings are like visual jazz improvisations, with vibrant colors on textured, shaped canvases that extend from the wall. An added dimension emerges when the paintings are viewed at various times of day, as the shadows from sunlight move across the wall. His monoprints and prayer flags also employ a similar imagery.
Goldenberg has received numerous grants and awards for his work. Since 2002, he has devoted much of his creative energy to a childrens museum project. Thanks to the key support of a philanthropist, a number of Goldenbergs paintings have been placed in childrens museums throughout the United States, including at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, VT. It is Goldenbergs hope that his work will inspire children to use their gifts of imagination and to encourage them to develop their spirit of creativity. He has also led a number of youth workshops, including one at the Montessori School in Rye, NH; one for at-risk teenage girls; and one for the Wall and Center Project for gay and transgender youths, funded by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts (NHCA).
