Originally I wrote "Summer Woods" for mixed chorus and piano - set to text of my friend, Henry Berne (1926-2009). This version is for piano solo. In the video the poem is displayed at the bottom of the screen as it follows the music. The piano version is written in memory of my dear friend, Henry, who loved to walk under the canopy of trees.

Summer woods
shouting July,
reveal themselves,
a bit at a time
like a model removing her clothes
no need to hide or blush or smile,
the pose is about art
and art is about soul,
invisible but present: engine for the process
of creation and herself.

And so summer woods allow sunlight
to spread their leaves,
to grade the greens,
from dark to light
and show their trunks,
bold and shy,
dancing with their shadows
to the strains
of the Wood Song: Summer Woods
