Hi brian - tried that, doesn't work for some reason! It's irritating, because it was recorded and uploaded in the correct ratio and was fine for a while until YT changed something in the background and then it went all letterbox on us! Doesn't seem to be a way to stop it, sorry.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." --- from the Holy Bible, Book of Isaiah 9:6

Exactly!!! Thank you for clearing that up! An athiest enjoying Christian music will never mean that the music is not Christian anymore, those who think that are simply choosing to be blinded to the fact :)

it is an oratorio with all the text derived from the king james bible and from psalms in the common book of prayer. there are 54 pieces of music in messiah. 3 melodies were adapted from earlier works. 5% does not an italian love duet make. why the dishonesty and hatred towards those who love G-d?

idiot. 259 pages of music written in 24 days and signed SDG - solio deo gloria - only for the glory of god. your lies and hatred of those who love G-d is palpable.

I'm not bothered by the Letterbox; we enjoy it for the music. The LSO is one of the world's great "house bands" and the choir never disappoints.

It doesn't really matter that Handel re-used the music from profane love songs, the beauty of the Messiah lies in the lyrics, It claims the glory and power of God, and a lot of people have the chance to get close to Him by this choruses.

Listen to the original version of this music "No, di voi non vo' fidarmi" e.g. on Youtube video V4-Nfpw13kY. Translation: "No, I do not want to trust you, / blind Love, cruel Beauty. / You lie too much, / like blandishing gods. / Once before you managed / to trap my trusting heart. / I know from experience your lies, / you will always be two tyrants." Handel worked quite economically and re-used the music of this and other profane love songs for several choruses in Messiah.

"For unto us a child is born!"

Grow up will you, freaking hilarious.

Your comment will make anyone laugh who knows what you most obviously don't know: Handel originally wrote this piece of music as an Italian love duet. When composing Messiah, he simply extended it to four voices and replaced the lyrics by the biblical words. For baroque composers, music was quite interchangeable. Like Bach, Handel "recycled" lots of secular music in his sacred works.
