The genius of Matthew Bellamy and Muse
Matthew James Bellamy (born 9 June 1978) is an English musician and composer, who is best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and primary songwriter of the rock band Muse.

Exogenesis Symphony (2009)
3. Redemption

Muse formed in Teignmouth, Devon in 1994 under the name of Rocket Baby Dolls. Still using the name Rocket Baby Dolls they won the school's battle of the bands which led them to take the band seriously, and decided to change their name to a more "professional" name, Muse. The band is composed of Matthew Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Dominic Howard (drums and percussion). Muse met at Teignmouth Community College where Bellamy had been in a number of bands previously including Carnage Mayhem and Gothic Plague with drummer Dominic Howard. When members of Gothic Plague left due to other interests, Bellamy and Howard asked Wolstenholme to join. Muse struggled to establish themselves during their early years but have since gone on to enjoy worldwide commercial success.

Muse blend alternative, hard rock, progressive rock, classical music and electronica and are well known for their energetic and visually dazzling live performances. On 1617 June 2007 became the first band to sell out the newly built Wembley Stadium in London. Muse has released five studio albums, Showbiz (1999), Origin of Symmetry (2001), Absolution (2003), Black Holes & Revelations (2006) and The Resistance (2009). Muse have also released one live album, HAARP (2008) and one compilation album Hullabaloo (2002). The first disc contains a collection of B-sides recorded between March 1999 and October 2001. The second disc features 11 live songs recorded on 2829 October 2001 at 'le Zenith' in Paris. Bellamy also makes an appearance as a playable character in Guitar Hero 5 which features the playable song Plug In Baby.

On 26 September 2008, the University of Plymouth awarded Bellamy an honorary doctorate degree in arts for his work in the field of music.

Bellamy is known for his use of falsetto and vibrato. His vocal range spans from an A2 to B♭4 and to A5 with falsetto.

  • This band (particularly this man) is so incredible. Exogenesis can move me to tears, something that no other contemporary musician or artist has been able to do for me. That's power.

    Lead on, Muse.

Yes - when people say Matt composed this piece, they're referring to the predominant orchestral elements. The drums and bass also play a part in this, and their parts were composed and played by Dom and Chris. It's a band effort.

  • @rollercoasterchess Yes, I agree, but are you saying now that Bellamy only partly wrote this symphony and that others wrote the rest? Like some kind of composition collective? If that is the case you proved your point.

  • @bartje11

I see where you're coming from, but there's a difference. If Bach composes a piece and hands it to the orchestra, Bach is the composer, the orchestra are the performers. We credit Bach for the genius. But this is like giving Bach all the credit even though the string parts were written by an entirely different person. Dom and Chris aren't just "performers" here, they played a significant part in the composition of this piece.

  • @bartje11 Despite all this we share our common love for music! Happy New Year. Cheers!!

  • @bartje11 Matthew Bellamy is a classically trained musician, he knows his composers, he writes his music on paper and scores it. It would be interesting to hear what he would have to say about this...... I would love to hear it.

  • @rollercoasterchess Yes, I am a composer and write everything, every note myself. The people who perform it are playing MY notes and not theirs. And furthermore they will get the usual credit as performers. I think our disagreement comes from the fact that I look at it from the composers perspective and you from the groups point of view. I know that the bass player, drummer etc, etc will come up with their own ideas and licks, which can make or break a piece.

  • @bartje11

Once again, it's just Muse. It's not a big leap from "Matthew Bellamy and Muse" to "Matt and some dudes". They're practically the same. Furthermore, what you're doing is crediting one composer despite the work having compositional contributions from multiple people. If you were a composer, you would appreciate the piece in its entirety, and all parties involved. Point is, you give Matt way more attention than is needed - all Dom and Chris get is a wikipedia excerpt.

  • @bartje11 And I start the info with "the genius of Matthew Bellamy and Muse" Not good enough for you? Why can't I give my respect as a composer to another composer?

  • @bartje11

When a song is written by Paul McCartney, it means he wrote the lyrics. It doesn't mean he gave George and Ringo a bunch of sheet music. From a musical standpoint, it's still a band effort. Queen is another example - Freddie was their main lyricist, he "wrote" most of their songs, it doesn't mean he wrote the guitar solos for Brian, or the drum fills for Roger.

And yeah, you show them in the video, but I direct you to the title of the video and the comment war I replied to.

  • @rollercoasterchess Of course I know that, but I mention Muse in the video, I show them don't I? But are you telling me that Matthew Bellamy didn't write the music? That;s why we have songs written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, or George Harrisson, or one or two Ringo Starr and NOT the Beatles. Is the same!
