The mechanism needs fettling; the carriage return isn't working properly. But we have signs of life: with the use of an old Tektronix 833 comms tester I can unlock the keyboard and see it sending data over the RS232 port in comms mode.

For my next trick, once I've mastered the eccentricities of the 833 and the code table used by the 2741, I'll try to get the 2741 into 'receive' mode, and print characters generated by the 833.

  • It is basically a Selectric with a translator/driver to connect it to a minicomputer or mainframe. Just about any Selectric could be converted.
