  • Some premature babys will develop disease called retonopathy of prematuritiy - severe ocular disease which can lead to blidness if not treated properly and in time.Severly premature child develop the disease earlier then less seee premature - this si why som childerna re axamined early some lastter. The development is rapid (in weeks) and the treatment (laser or cryotherapy) must be done now!.

  • And this couln't wait a couple of months? As if the poor things aren't stressed enough!

  • @Linnas79

No it couldnt - if you mis the right time for treatment (laser or cryotherapy of retina) the child will be blind for the resto of his life. Isnt the 10 minutes of discomfort worth it?

  • @JHHycl

Again if you was in shoes of parents- will you change 10 minustes of doscomfort of your baby for their sight, or not? Belive me-all parent go for signt of their children -I am sure you will make the same decision. Is it easy the criticise others and stand ond strong positions without having to carry the consequences of wrong decision..

  • My daughter had this done weekly as she was a micro preemie, and it does not hurt. it is uncomfortable but they go really quickly and the baby is fine after. my daughter had stage 3 ROP and had to have laser eye surgery after she was released. Without the exam she could be blind right now because it would not have been detected. So far she has 20/20 vision =0) Oh and the pupil is big because they put dilating drops in so they can see the retinas!
