Jewish Leaders Call for Olympic Boycott

In the U.S., some Jewish leaders are taking a stand against the Beijing Olympics. The say that China, like Germany in 1936, is trying to use the Olympics as a public relations tool to deflect attention from it's poor human rights record. Over 170 Jewish leaders in the U.S. recently signed a petition calling for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

NTD spoke over the phone with one of the organizers of the petition, Rabbi Haskel Lookstein of New York:

[Rabbi Dr. Haskel Lookstein, Ramaz School]:

"We aren't out to make war against China. We want to tell Americans and American Jews that Rabbis and particulary orthodox rabbis are concerned with more than the occurence (not exactly sure about this world-abrevence??) of shabat and kashrut and other ritual matters. We are also concerned with the suffering of human beings wherever they may be, specifically in Darfur and in Tibet."

Petition signers include the former Mayor of New York City Edward Koch, dozens of prominent Rabbis, Holocaust experts and others.

The main point of the boycott wasn't to compare China's actions to the Germans. It was only because of poor treatment of human beings. The only reason for mentioning Nazi Germany was that they also hosted the Olympics to improve their public image. Just clarifying...
