Shirley recorded and released both Don't Cry Out Loud AND All By Myself on her 1982 LP Titled, 'Shirley Bassey - All By Myself'
ABOUT Don't Cry Out Loud and the Writer, Peter Allen:
This song was written by Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager, who were staff writers at Metromedia Records. Among their other hits was the Oscar winning "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," an American chart topper for Christopher Cross in 1981. Allen was an Australian singer songwriter who was married to Liza Minnelli for a few years. He originally recorded this song on his 1971 debut album and after its chart success re-recorded it on his fourth studio album I Could Have Been a Sailor. In 1977 his song "I Go to Rio" shot to #1 in the Australian charts thanks to its promotional video, which demonstrated the growing influence of the music video as a marketing tool. In 1992 he died of an AIDS-related throat cancer.
LYRICS:
Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'cause she didn't want parades just passing by her
So she painted on a smile
and took up with some clown
While she danced without a net upon the wire
I know a lot about her
'cause, you see
Baby is an awful lot like me
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside
And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all
Baby saw that when they pulled the big top down
They left behind her dreams among the litter
The different kind of love she thought she'd found
There was nothing left but sawdust and some glitter
But baby can't be broken 'cause you see
She had the finest teacher - that was me
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside
And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside
And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost made it
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside
And learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all
While it makes a good story...I don't think Melissa Manchester made millions off this song...the songwriter (Peter Allen) usually makes 90% of the profits!
