Super Car Thailand 2009, Rd 5 & 6, Bira Circuit, Pattaya, Chonburi - views from the Super Car grid

The entries for the Super Car series were pretty much the same as the previous round with 21 cars appearing on the list. The black-and-gold Singha Beer sponsored Porsche 911 Cup car that had dominated last time I was here again was looking promising again, as were the two extreme-looking Team Arto Toyotas, that appeared to be refugees from the Japanese Super GT series of a few years ago, which menacingly sandwiched the German car at the front of the grid. According to the time sheets posted in the media centre, Vutthikorn in the #18 Porsche had won Saturdays 22-lap race, finishing just 0.458 seconds ahead of the first of the two official Toyota runners, Nattavude, while his team mate in the other silver-and-red liveried Altis, Nattapong, had claimed the final podium slot, 38.056 seconds back. Behind this trio there were three Mitsubishi Evos spread over the next four slots, with the interloper being a Mazda RX-7. Last time out the Singha Porsche had humiliated the two very professional-looking Toyotas but this time there were to be no mistakes and the Japanese machines ran away and hid at the front as the black German machine dropped back very quickly with what sounded like a broken exhaust which would have accounted from the 5-10 seconds a lap it lost until retiring after 14 of the 22 laps. New into the field was a BMW E30 M3 based racer although the team reported that they were being plagued with problems and the car wasnt able to complete more than a handful of laps at any one time. It didnt start Saturdays race, however it qualified mid-grid and toiled round for 5 laps before quitting the action. The final slot on the grid had gone to a Nissan 350Z [GTR] based racer that started without its front bumper section, displaying its radiator, oil cooler and other various bits of aluminium to the world. The errant bumper/spoiler section was lashed to the teams flat-bed in the paddock so one assumed it had suffered irreparable damage the previous day, reinforced by the time sheets that had shown the car as departing from the race on the first lap. For the record Nattavude won the sixth round of the 2009 Super Car Thailand Series, 7.540 seconds ahead of the similar Team Arto Toyota Altis of Nattapong, their 1-2 following up a 2-3 finishing order respectively on Saturday and no doubt helping their championship points position. Nattavude also posted the fastest lap of the race in 1:02.628 which he turned in on his fourth tour of the track. Last one onto the rostrum was the #11 Subaru Impreza of Aekarat who made up for the disappointment of a DNF the day before. He was 23.512 seconds behind the winner and the only other car on the lead lap at the chequered flag. Fourth went to the #81 Mitsubishi Evo VIII of Voravut, which made it two fourth places in the two races. Fifth was another Evo (Kajohnsak), with a Nissan Skyline (Sanchai) sixth ahead of the singleton Mazda RX-7 (Thanapol) in the race. The top ten was rounded out by Jack (Toyota Altis), Sontaya (Porsche 996 GT3) and Thomas (Honda Civic), the latter 2 laps down, while the only other finisher was the white Toyota Supra of Pinet, and he was three laps adrift.
