A Very Nice rendition by Schipa

Marechiare- a classic Neapolitan song
about a young man
serenading his girl Caruli (Caroline) outside
her window in Marechiare -(a section of Naples)

Quanno spónta la luna a Marechiare,
pure li pisce nce fanno a ll'ammore...
Se revòtano ll'onne de lu mare:
pe' la priézza cágnano culore...
Quanno sponta la luna a Marechiare.

A Marechiare ce sta na fenesta:
la passiona mia ce tuzzuléa...
Nu garofano addora 'int'a na testa,
passa ll'acqua pe' sotto e murmuléa...
A Marechiare ce sta na fenesta....
.......
Chi dice ca li stelle só lucente,
nun sape st'uocchie ca tu tiene 'nfronte!
Sti ddoje stelle li ssaccio i' sulamente:
dint'a lu core ne tengo li ppónte...
Chi dice ca li stelle só lucente?

Scétate, Carulí, ca ll'aria è doce...
quanno maje tantu tiempo aggi'aspettato?!
P'accumpagná li suone cu la voce,
stasera na chitarra aggio purtato...
Scétate, Carulí, ca ll'aria è doce!..
**************************************************

When the moon rises over Marechiare
even the fish tremble with love.
the waves of the sea churn with joy
in the bosom of the sea,
when the moon rises over Marechiare.

In Marechiare there is a window,
my passion flies there,
a carnation perfumes the air
beneath it, the water murmurs,
in Marechiare there is a window.
...
Who says that the stars shine bright
has never seen the splendor of your eyes.
I know so well their burning light
that descends into the depths of this heart.
Who says that the stars shine bright?

Wake up, Caruli, here the air is sweet,
how long have I waited for you?
The sound of my voice will accompany
a guitar that I've brought tonight
Wake up, Caruli, here the air is sweet

  • great video

  • Truly one of the greatest if not THE greatest pure male lyric voices.

  • Schipa IS my fav tenor (have most of his recordings)--although was voice was small indeed, the technique is impeccable, annunciation incredible--and, as a former dancer, you are able to actually "dance" to his voice (understand he helped Joan Crawford when he was in Hollywood). Met Opera made the correct decision in choosing Gigli over him as he (nor Gigli later on w/his lyric tenor) could replace Caruso in 1921 (Gigli developed that sob to gain breath for dramatic roles, I was told).

  • Bello bello ! Whatever happened to this gorgeous genre ?

  • La plus plaisante !

  • The best ever ! , his voice and interpretation is unique !

  • Great voice,,,,love it

  • Great stuff.

  • Cando iscurto sas cantones napulitanas dae sa boghe de Schipa mi tocant de prus sos sentidos.
