He's always spoken like that, even to the congregation. If you had listened to some of his sermons you would know that.
Remember, he was also raised in the cult. He is just as brainwashed as them. He went through the same abuse, he received the same indoctrination.
I think he truly believed he was a prophet. In this case, he is both the criminal and the victim.

Joseph Smith, the number one prophet and founder of the Mormon church today eventually with the polygamy had married a girl as young as 14 or 16 just like Warren Jeffs...
