When I studied psychology I learned a term that is ever so applicable here.

That term was *transference*

Transference refers to the concept of recognizing traits in oneself and transferring them to others. It clearly describes the condition of finding fault with oneself yet imagining that the fault lays in another simply because one recognizes the fault.
