Tallulah was not jealous! The comments were made for comedy reasons because Bette Davis openly admitted to playing Dark Victory like Tallulah and even though Bette was awesome in All About Eve, she did have alot of similarities to Tallulah. Tallulah liked Bette and she often went to see her plays and went backstage to talk to her afterwards. There was a rivalry but it wasn't mean spirited but jealous, it was for entertainment.
@4262009AP "All About Eve" was a screenplay by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, based on the short story "The Wisdom of Eve" by Mary Orr. There was never a stage play starring Tallulah Bankhead. There was a musical version of "All About Eve" called "Applause" in 1970 starring Lauren Bacall, after Tallulah Bankhead died.
Tallulah Bankhead was jealous because she, along with Miriam Hopkins, was jealous of Bette Davis due to the fact that Bette Davis took a role of her's that she had originated on Broadway and in the film versions, Bette did it "better" than her.
Aside from "All About Eve", Bette also gave great performances in "Dark Victory" (1939), "The Little Foxes" (1941), and "Watch on the Rhine" (1943) playing the female lead that Tallulah first played on the New York stage.
Was Tallulah jealous??? I have no idea, I know nothing about her so I have no idea what she was like but it seems to me that she was so hung up on Bette Davis' Margo and she just went on and on about it. I have no doubt that Tallulah was awesome too but really!!!

Tallu was most certainly n o t jealous of Bette Davis. The rivarly, as such, resulted from
fact that Davis imitated her in Eve - with coiff, mink coat, dress, etc. That said, Davis was
yes terrific. But there's only one Bankhead.
